“At first glance he looks fierce, but he is really a kind person” (Mikake wa koi-i tonda iku hitoda, みかけはこわいがとんだいい人だ). This design was originally created by Kuniyoshi in about 1850, but has become very scarce and pricey. In 2001 new woodblocks were created using wild cherry by Tachihara Inumoto and Echizen paper was used to create this print. It was published by Gallery Sobi as an affordable homage to the original. There are even later reproductions that surface, but they do not have the quality of this hand-printed work. Kuniyoshi’s humor and creativity knew no bounds.
