Kunisada: Jiraiya Holding a Compass and Tasago with Inro and Netsuke (Sold)

  • Sold.

Artist: Utagawa Kunisada
Title: Jiraiya Holding a Compass
Date: 1852
Size: ôban diptych (35.4 x 49.5 cm)

Ichikawa Danjuro VIII as Jitsumu Shonin Jiraiya, and Arashi Rikan III as Takasago Yuminosuke. Jiraiya looks up at the stars as he holds a navigational aid (compass?) or perhaps geomantic aid as Tasago holds up an inro with a netsuke in the shape of a frog. The frog is relevant because Jiraiya is best known for his Frog Magic. Scarce design. Ukiyo-e images that show prominent netsuke and inro are highly sought-after by sagemono collectors.
