Artist: Utagawa Kunisada
Title: Tattooed Boatman and Birds
Series: Picture List of Birds (Tori zukushi)
Date: 1860

A boatman with a tattoo featuring a beauty in festival attire beneath cherry blossoms looks to his right. Above the clouds we see seabirds, some swimming and one flying. Among them are floating cherry blossoms. The title may read “Miyako-dori and Sanushima Sota”. The birds seem to be oystercatchers. The boatman holds the tiller to his boat with both hands, and his unusual expression displays what looks like determination or effort. This design was featured at the Yokohama Museum of Art exhibition “Fascinating Japanese Woodcut Prints”, March-May, 2014.
