Koshiro Onchi: Ueno Zoo (Sold)

  • Sold.

Artist: Koshiro Onchi 1891-1955
Title: Ueno Zoo
Date: ca 1945

Visitors enjoy Ueno Zoo in Ueno Park. One girl in a pink dress seems especially excited, raising her arms with joy. It must be summer, as the clothing is light and the trees are verdant. This work is part of a portfolio of 15 prints that were published by the Japanese Print Association as a reminder of what was lost during the war, done by a number of prominent sosaku hanga artists. Orchestrated by Onchi Koshiro, this is one of three contributions by Onchi to the series, who was probably its most celebrated contributor. The blocks were carved in 1929, and the work was printed in 1945. With original mount, included separately.
