Four small sketches of battle
Title: Four small sketches of battle
Date: ca. 1870s
Four small sketches that appear like a storyboard, perhaps for an illustrated book or a group of prints. The dress of the participants dates these to the battles between the rebels and the Meiji Restoration forces of the late 1870s. It is possible that these are even by Yoshitoshi himself, but a student’s hand is more likely. There are identifying cartouches next to the figures, but they are not legible. Yoshitoshi often used a red pigment for under-drawing before then using sumi, a technique that his students also employed.
Condition: Laid down onto backing sheet.
