In the early 20th century, Japanese artists and publishers created a contemporary take on this classic theme. The women are more naturalistic and the printing represents the apogee of color woodblock printing in the 20th century. The most popular artists are Ito Shinsui, Torii Kotondo and Hashiguchi Goyo. Most were done in limited editions. When comparing works from this genre, it is critical to look for any signs of fading, especially in the pink of the skin.

Artist: Itō Shinsui
Title: Gathering Shellfish (Shiohigari)
Series: Second Collection of Modern Beauties
Date: 1931

A young beauty ties her hair with a scarf, her kimono decorated with seashells as a hint as to where she stands. As she seems to be seated on a high stool rather than kneeling on the tatami as per tradition, we know that this is a public ceremony rather than a private one. Indeed, this tea ceremony is part of the Miyako Odori, the geisha dance performances held every April in Kyoto. Prior to the dance performance, a geiko on a platform at the front of the room may offer a tea ceremony for the public to observe. Here the geiko (Kyoto geisha) wears a rather ceremonial black kimono and all of the elements match the reverence of the occasion. This public tea ceremony may still be experienced today as part of the Miyako Odori dances. A modern twist of the scene of a woman at her mirror, the eye here is drawn to the boldly checkered datemaki sash that was worn to secure an under kimono. Perhaps because this accessory was never seen by the public, it accentuates the privacy of this moment. Its tension on her slender waist is emphasized, and we also get a glimpse of her neck as she secures a comb, the neck being considered a highly erotic space by the Japanese. The mirror at left has a mica finish, and the beautiful bokashi effect on the shibori-patterned cushion gives her a sense of floating on air. The term appears in Japanese poetry as early as the 8th century anthology Manyôshû, “Collection of Ten-thousand Leaves”. Although tastefully suggestive to the modern viewer, the early Showa-period authorities found this work so salacious that they confiscated the publisher’s remaining stock of 30 published prints, leading to the extraordinary rarity of this design, as only 70 were ever sold. The blocks were carved by Maeda Kentaro, considered to be a master carver of his generation. This work is considered one of the masterpieces of shin hanga, as well as Kotondo’s finest design.
