Title: The Snow Maiden Umekawa
Date: ca. 1923

The heroine Umekawa  from the play MEIDO NO HIKYAKU. Large flakes of gofun-printed snow accent her pale visage, which peeks out from behind her sleeve and beneath her blue hair covering. There is mica in the background, as well as in her hairpin. From a series of 18 prints printed by Nishimura Kumakichi in 1923, published as supplements to the 16-volume “The Complete Works of Chikamatsu”. Considered the first edition, as it contains the printer and carver seals at bottom (Nishimura Kumakichi and Yamagishi Kazue).

Condition: Excellent impression, color and condition. There is a splash of white gofun in the hair that was done at the time of printing.
