The one-hundred meter high Kegon Falls is located in Lake Chuzenji in Nikko National Park, and is especially popular during the autumn foliage months. He was a powerful prime minister as well as a poet. The subject of this design is Emperor Uda (868-931), who was the first emperor to abdicate and become a Buddhist monk. His son was the great emporer Daigo. Uda found the autumn colors of Mount Ogura so beautiful that he had Tadahira write a poem as invitation for his son to visit. The poem reads “If the maple leaves\/ On the ridge of Ogura\/ Have the gift of mind\/ They will longingly await\/ One more august pilgrimage”. The scene is autumn at the temple compound. We see monks to the left, one bowing and welcoming the standing young man. The printing of the blowing snow is masterful, as the snowflakes streak across the entire scene using elements of both positive and negative space. Hasui notes that he worked closely with the publisher and carver\/printer to utilize novel techniques to create the desired textures on the woodblocks. Very scarce, pre-earthquake design in an unusual format. Unlike most watercolors that appear on market, this work seems to be preliminary to a print design, or at least an idea for a print design; most watercolors are more likely done after a print design, assumedly by request, and feel more idealized. This work feels like the result of direct observation, when the artist captured a specific moment in time en plein air. The brushwork, the size and the type of paper indicate to this dealer that the artist was working outside for this work. Hisao Shimizu, the late\u003cspan class=\"Apple-converted-space\"\u003e  \u003c\/span\u003ecurator of the Ota City Folk Museum believes that there are three types of watercolors done by Hasui; an original for print design; ones intended for exhibition (signed with “hanga-do”); and by request for collectors who liked his prints. Early works like this that were not based on published prints are very scarce indeed. We can assume that the notation at bottom “11.8.8” is a date that may indicate the eighth day of the eleventh month of Showa 8, 1933. All the details attest to the prosperity of the city and its waterways. Tsukuda Island was a low, sandy islet at the mouth of the Sumida River, the main river artery through Edo. It was a village of both fishermen and boat pilots, as large boats from the sea could anchor and wait to be unloaded into smaller vessels and carried through Edo’s network of waterways. The small boats could beach on the island and wait for the large ships to begin unloading. Many fishermen also lived on the island, and we can see a single fisherman casting a net from his small boat at far left. Plovers are seen flying low across the water, lending a sweep of movement to contrast with the stillness of the resting boats. Several of the men carry wooden swords as offerings which will presumably be offered at the Aburi Shrine that is further up Mount Oyama. We see traveling hats stacked at right with the seal of the publisher Nishimuraya Yohachi winkingly adorning the topmost one. Men here seem to be resting and conversing in a cottage, cloths hanging to dry nearby--their relaxed mien hints that they might have already visited the temple. The publisher has also snuck in his name “Ei” on the hat hanging on the fence at bottom as well as his trademark on the robe of the man dressing at lower left. This edition has been printed with a spring green rather than a lemon yellow at bottom left and in the cliffs, and the roofs are also a green-brown rather than an orange color. The rocks in the foreground have distinctive, somewhat geometric formations, and are done in a completely different color scheme than the cliffs on the opposite shore, which are shown in grey. The geology of this feature must be most interesting. The Kiso River flows through Nagano, Gifu, Aichi and Mie before emptying into Ise Bay, near the city of Nagoya. Regarding this exact viewpoint on the river, Hasui often titled his works with colloquial place names that are sometimes difficult to pinpoint today. The expert techniques used by the printers in creating the textures of this work are varied, and include a perfectly smooth sky, roughly textured rocks, medium-textured rocks and a rippling yet glassy river surface. For this work to be in mint condition, as here, the clouds in the sky still have a glowing pink color and the vegetation at the top of the cliff have a brilliant, vibrant yellow atop the green. Although Sakamoto was primarily known as an oil painter, Merritt notes that “although Sakamoto’s painting style was highly simplified, he sought even further simplification through woodblocks.” (page 100 of Modern Japanese Woodblock Prints: The Early Years). The village of Namino no longer exists as an independent town, as it was merged with two other towns in 2003 to create the city of Aso.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp class=\"p1\"\u003eAccording to Merritt, this series was first published in a limited edition of 300 in 1950 by Kuga Isao of Sōjinsha, with carving and printing at Katō Hanga Kenkyūsho under the supervision of Katō Junji. This work comes from that first edition. Merrit goes on to state that the series underwent a number of subsequent printings until 1971. This work is from the first edition, as it came with the envelope print that features two horses grazing, as known for the first edition, printed either in 1948 or 1950.
