Title: Hyokeikan 東京国立博物館 表慶館 in Spring Snow
Date: 1930

Series: One Hundred Views of New Tokyo (Shin Tokyo Hyakkei)

We see the round dome of the Tokyo National Museum (Hyokeikan 東京国立博物館 表慶館) poking up behind the row of trees in Ueno Park. Founded in 1872, it is the oldest and the largest art museum in Japan. This unusual view has been composed in the icy palette of winter, the trees still wrapped in their winter slumber. This terrific series by eight young sosaku-hanga artists captured urban images of Tokyo in the years between the wars. It was sold by subscription between 1928 and 1932, and only 50 sets were made. It showcases the beauty of the “modern” city of Tokyo and a fresh energy to create new types of prints that were self-carved and self-printed by the artists. Fujimori Shizuo was a close friend of Onchi Koshiro and designed 13 works in this series.  Included is the original folder/mat, with publisher and date information in Japanese. Scarce.
