Drawing of an actor during a fight
Date: ca 1840s
Portrait of Sawamura Sôjurô V (?). Possibly a scene from the night attack of the Soga Brothers. We see the cartouche outlining the area where Kuniyoshi’s signature and seals will reside. There are three areas of pentimenti. The right arm that was grasping a stick now holds a circular object, from which a liquid is pouring out onto the ground. The face has been turned from looking right to looking left. There are some ink blots, possibly from another drawing that was laid on top of this. The crest holds the key to the story, but could not be identified. From the Sotheby’s purchase album of 1992.
