Drawing of seated warrior with bow and fan
Date: ca 1840s
Preparatory ink drawing for a print of Towara Toda (Fujiwara Hidesato, 10th century), holding his bow and fan, sitting in front of a table replete with gifts possibly given to him by the Dragon King, Ryujin, whose underwater kingdom he once saved. Only the bottom part of the series title can be read: ... “yu gaden” (Series of Pictures of Brave ... [Warriors (?)]). Large pentimento attached on the main sheet containing a correction to the position of Toda's arm. It is unusual for a preparatory drawing of this stage to contain a signature and series title. From the albums purchased at Sotheby’s London in 1992.
Condition: Binding holes and some paper loss near edges, although the overall condition is very good for a preparatory drawing. The original very thin paper has been backed with a thin sheet.
