Masatsura and his Mother: Drawing and Print
Date: ca. 1840s
The wife of Kusunoki Masashige restrains her young son Masatsura from performing seppuku after his father’s death. The subject matches the print, although the final design is markedly different. In the print the boy has gone one step further, removing his upper garment in the final stage before directing the knife to himself. From a group of albums of Kuniyoshi drawings bought at Sotheby’s London in 1992.
